I had my first pap a year ago, during my appointment to get a prescription for birth control. It does not hurt. If you’re nervous and can’t relax, you’ll be uncomfortable. They’ll put lubrication on the speculum before inserting it and when it opens, it feels a little odd. The brush they use also feels weird, but it doesn’t hurt. They’ll swirl it around a few times, in order to collect cells from your cervix. Then they’ll take those and test them make sure you don’t have any abnormalities. They may also use a cotton swab to get a sample of your cervical mucus to test. I think it’s general practice to test for chalmydia and gonorrhea. Pic below is a diagram of how a pap works:

It may look kind of freaky, but it’s really no big deal. 
I also had a pelvic exam at the same time. Your doctor will insert a (gloved, lubriacted) finger into your vagina so they can feel around for any abnormalities. 
You may experience cramping after it’s all done and it can even trigger your period (it did for me and my doctor said it was completely normal).
Just relax and it’ll be over quickly!

It’s uncomfortable. But painless. It lasts maybe 2 minutes.... if that. Just stay relaxed because then the dr will have difficulty getting the device in.

It’s not painful, it’s uncomfortable. Especially if you don’t relax and they put the speculum inside you and open it up. I hate that the most. And after that it kind feels like they are scraping you with a toothbrush inside. Doesn’t hurt, just uncomfortable. You might slightly bleed afterwards.

It’s uncomfortable. However it also depends on how great your doctors attitude is. My doctor at the VA was just all hurry hurry about it and swabbed with the thing for the cells very rough and that did hurt. But 99% of the time it’s just uncomfortable.
