Genital Herpes?

I have always heard that you can get genital herpes from your partner having a cold sore on their mouth. But besides that, I don't know much else. Me and my so have been together for 4 years and we recently started having sex. If we are only with each other (no cheating) is there a possibility to get Genital Herpes? I am on birth control (pill, and I always make sure to take it perfectly) so I rarely use condoms. I do not have it and neither does my SO, I just got curious on the topic of it. I want to know if it is possible to get genital herpes or regular herpes, and how you can get either one? I just would like to be more informed on the subject to make sure I don't risk getting it.
