How Do I Break Up With Him?

I’ve been with a guy for almost 2.5 years, and I want to call it quits. We’ve had tons of ups and downs, and very public fights. We’ve broken up and gotten back together several times, and all of my friends and family hate him because of awful things he’s done to me. It my own fault I’m still in this relationship, I’m not blaming anyone else. I just don’t want to hurt him. He claims he’s in love with me and wants to be with me forever. I don’t know how to end it because I don’t want to break his heart. I still care about him a lot, but I know that I’m not in love with him anymore.
