Will they medically discharge?

My fiancé has been in the army national guard for 7 years now. 5 months ago he went to a month long over sea training and badly injured his leg. He tore his Achilles, ACL, MCL, meniscus, and potentially more. It’s been a long frustrating wait. we are currently waiting on them to authorize his surgery which the surgeon said they won’t know the full extent of the damage until they do the surgery but he will not be able to return to work for a minimum of 6 weeks. What are the chances of him getting medically discharged? If he were to be medically discharged can he still get tri care insurance?

No one can really tell you the chances...it all depends on the results of the surgery and wether or not his doctor(s) think he can return to duty. Some limitations can be accepted, some can't. 
I don't think he'll have access to TriCare, though. But he should have access to VA benefits.

The military “should” give him a recovery time (for example 6 months) before med board. If med board determines that he is over 30% disabled then he will be medically retired which includes a monthly payment from his branch of service and free healthcare for him for the rest of his life. He can pursue VA benefits in addition to his mil disability benefits. I’m 90% sure dependents lose Tricare once his service ends.

Honestly it’s kinda luck of the draw. With that many injuries he could get discharged but idk. I’ve known people who flipped the muscle that’s above the knee cap and all they needed was it to be flipped back over and they got medically discharged. Little things they kick people out for but at the same time my dad had knee surgery while deployed and he didn’t get kicked out. So ya got a 50/50 chance. However if they are willing to schedule a surgery I wouldn’t worry to much cause they aren’t gonna pay for a surgery for someone they are gonna kick out. Ya know?

He’s got a pretty high chance of med boarding... medical discharge. Depending on the rating they give him he’ll get a pension from the va and still maintain his benefits

I guess I’m more looking to see if anyone has experienced injuries similar to this and if they were able to return to duty or if they were discharged. We are worried about loosing tri care because we can’t afford to get insurance for our son and I through either of our jobs (700 a month. no amount of budgeting will make that possible 😞)
