**BACK STORY**
Five years ago my husband got a vasectomy while I was pregnant with our youngest. We were “sure” we were done. Well, 3 years ago when our youngest turned 2 we both started to feel a lot of regret about the vasectomy. However we weren’t in the best place financially and we made the decision to work our butts off so that in a few years (now) we could afford to have his vasectomy reversed.
**OUR DILEMMA**
So, three years and over $50,000 dollars (in savings and a lot of debt paid off) later and we are starting to question the right path to take. We are torn between a few different options.
**REVERSAL**
The reversal would be the least expensive of the baby options. We have a doctor that can do it for relatively cheap and we’d have to travel but the total cost would be $2,200. So, expense wise it’s great. The drawbacks are that it could be unsuccessful and it could take several years for me to get pregnant if it does work (I’m 31 so I don’t want to wait toooo long). The other issue is that we don’t want make than 2 more kids. So, eventually we’d have to look into another form of permanent birth control. I can’t take hormonal birth control (I had a mini stroke a few years ago) and they don’t want me to add hormones to the mix. However, I don’t want him to have to have a vasectomy again haha but I don’t want to tie my tubes because I’ve heard it can cause a lot of issues.
**IVF**
We spoke to a fertility doctor and they said we have the option of them using aspiration to retrieve his sperm and then we could do IVF. So, obviously that’s much more costly and there’s also a chance it won’t work. There’s also a chance for multiples (which we’d be okay with because I’d have them all at once rather than being at a more advanced age when I had subsequent babies).
**NEITHER**
We’ve also considered just being done and putting that money into a new house or renovating our current home. I just don’t know about that. Some days, that sounds good but most of the time I find myself yearning for more children and I am afraid I’d regret it if I don’t.
