weaning

my 13 month old is like way attached to nursing but he's also been so demanding about it and biting me and not sleeping through the night but he also doesn't eat great so im wondering if its not time. I'm wondering how y'all went about weaning from the breast he won't take a sippy. my mom said with me and my sibs she put a nail biting stuff on her nipples and then we would start rejecting her and weaned ourselves has anyone had luck with this it seems mean. I'm ready to stop nursing but I'm also having a really really hard time with it emotionally i don't want my baby to dislike me
