When someone asks you out but you have a boyfriend

What’s a good way to say “sorry, I have a boyfriend.”  I’ve done that phrase before during class where he got the balls to ask me out and I had to reply there and then, where all of my classmates saw him get humiliated.  And for some reason I felt bad?

You don’t need to feel bad. Either say “Sorry. I have a boyfriend.” Or “Thank you, but I have to decline as I am in a relationship.”  A quick explanation is much less humiliating than a flat no.

I always thank them, as a courtesy, since it isn’t easy to put yourself out there. Then I tell them gently that I’m happily spoken for :) it’s always received graciously.

What you said is perfect. I sometimes I just smile and say "that's nice of you, but I don't think my boyfriend would approve", when I was working I used to wear a fake (but realistic) engagement ring to be proactive when I was working with customers.

Tbh it’s his fault for asking in front of people instead of privately. Not your fault for being in a relationship. There’s no other way you could have responded. When/someone hits on me I️ just say “Thanks, but I️’m with someone.”
