when will my son be able to put himself to sleep instead of me having to rock him to sleep and how do i help him make that transition??

I think it depends on the baby. I was lucky and my little boy honestly would fall asleep on his own from the beginning. We never had to do any kind of sleep training with him. We had him in his room in his own crib from two weeks old on. I would lay him down every night at the same time and follow the same routine and he just picked up on routine. He’s 13 months old now and in a toddler bed. He’ll walk over to his bed, crawl in, let me kiss him goodnight and goes straight to sleep. I think kids really pick up in routine and habits.

I never rocked my children to sleep, I think once you start it they get used to it. But therefore my daughter only falls asleep with me next to her. She one and a half years old. Maybe it would help you transition if you just lay next to him instead of rocking him. But how old is he anyway? If he's older maybe you can explain to him that you'll sit or lay next to him and wait until he falls asleep.

My daughters been putting herself to sleep since she was 9 weeks old. Been sleeping through the night, 10-12 hours straight by 5 weeks old.

We started teaching our daughter to self soothe from day 1 of bringing her home. And she was doing it on her own by 6 weeks. The way we did it was get her close to sleep by rocking, and then lay her down right before falling asleep so she would learn to fall asleep on her own. If she would have trouble going on to sleep, we would go in and settle her then leave her to go to sleep on her own again. Sometimes it would take a few times of resettling, but not to often. After a couple weeks all we had to do was lay her down, and she would lay there for a bit then drift of to sleep. There was a little regression at about 9 months, but we just started the routine again and after a week she was back on track. Thanks to this method she has also been sleeping through the night since she was about 3 months old.

When my son was 2 months old We started to put him to bed while he was sleepy but still awake. And he would go to sleep. Don't expect you LO to go right from playing to bed and actually fall asleep. For bedtime and naptimes we had a routine. Diaper change, low lights, soft music, read a few books, then lay down in the crib and sleep. Sometimes I'd hear him move around or talk to himself, and that's fine with me. Working with him so young has helped him to be a good sleeper. Being able to fall asleep is a skill that babies need to learn, it's not always something they get without our help. Falling asleep on their own means they'll be about to fall back asleep on their own after waking during the night. It will not happen instantly, but it's a step in the right direction. 💕

I rocked my son to sleep until he was 2.  When he moved to a toddler bed I would read to him and sing to him and rub his back til he fell asleep and now he is 4.5 and we read 3 books, talk about his day, and then I sing and he goes to sleep.

My daughter has luckily self soothed since birth only when she’s being fussy do I need I step in and help. Shes 3 months.
