How did you say it?

My boyfriend and me have been together for 10 months. He hasn't said I love you. I'm pretty sure it's because he's just not the emotional/affectionate type. So I decided tonight while we are cuddling in bed I'm going to tell him I love him. I do, very very much. Just because I'm nervous he might not say it back or feel the same, tell me some of your stories where you've said it first and how! 
PS (I thought about saying it at different times but before we go to sleep I'm just going to say it. I didn't want to say it on the trip because if he didn't feel the same I wouldn't want it to be awkward. But it's too hard not to tell him)

I said it to my boyfriend first. we were together a year and a half and he hadn't said it. We were laying in bed, cuddling and I leaned my head up towards his and whispered it in his ear. I was so nervous. He said it back. he told me afterwards that he didn't say it yet because he was waiting for me to say it first so that he knew I truly loved him and I wouldn't have said it back to him just because he said it to me first.

My husband said it on our first date. lol We met on an online forum and wound up as administrators of a sub-group, which forced us to have to interact and work together. I was engaged at the time to a very unpleasant person and when I realized I was more excited to talk about issues on the forum with my now-husband than I was to talk about anything with my fiance, who was becoming increasingly depressed, erratic, and violently angry, I decided it was time to make a clean break.
My husband is 18 years older than I am and didn't see the point of wasting time and messaged me expressing his interest. We emailed for about three months before he flew out to meet me. He spent four days with me and we talked about literally everything. He was married once before and it did not end well. He wasn't interested in just playing around and neither was I. 
On his last evening in town, he took me out for a very nice dinner in downtown Ottawa, ON and then we walked up to Parliament Hill. As we were walking along, we passed by an open air bar and some woman called out, "Hey, cowboy! You should be in here with us!" He put his arm around my waist, pulled me into him, and said, "I'm right where I should be."
When we got to the Hill, I thanked him for dinner and for the lovely visit. I was nervous (in a good way) and kept swinging back and forth on the railing we were standing next to. He got this little twinkle in his eye and told me he wanted to tell me something. He pulled me over to him and kissed me (still my favourite kiss ever 😍) and said, "I want to tell you I love you." My heart was beating so fast. lol "You don't have to say it back, I just wanted you to know."
I did love him, but I wasn't ready to say it   yet, but after he flew back to Seattle and we were reduced to phone calls, email, and Skype, I devised a way to let him know I loved him without saying the words. I have no idea where it came from, but my code phrase was, "Your socks have holes in them." I told him that every time we talked until he flew out for another visit. Before we could go out by ourselves, we met my parents for coffee, which was their first introduction. I was so antsy to get away because I HAD to tell him I loved him. Of course, my mother had a million questions and I was sitting there like, "Yes, yes mum, enough already." lol
We finally got away and I took him back to the exact spot on Parliament Hill where he told me he loved me. "I have something to tell you," I said. Then I leaned and whispered, "I love you." "I know," he said. And then he kissed me - for a good long while. 💓
