So, my girlfriend and I were watching a telanovela (I'm hispanic) and I joked that we could totally name our future son Mateo (A popular hispanic boy name) and she immediately said "People would call him matt." with a tone of disgust. This irritated me because of all the Mateo's I've met, none of them have gone by matt. Hispanics are typically very proud of their culture, and I certainly am one of them. I pointed out that of all the Mateo's I've known, none have gone by or accepted Matt. She kept pushing the idea and it irritated me that she was talking over me (and my culture and my experiences within my culture) when she, an Australian, doesn't understand or have any intimate knowledge of the culture and just thinks that she knows better than I do about mi cultura, mi gente! I would never speak over her or assume I know better than she does about Australian culture, when I have just as much knowledge of Australian culture as she does Mexican.
