Sleep Training for Toddler

Parents, please some positive words and some advice for my husband and I!! 😔 Our 16 month old has shared our bed with us for about 7 months. He also wakes up about twice a night. We would like for him to start sleeping in his own crib and in his room. We tried putting him in his crib today in his room for nap time and he just cried and cried. My husband and I sat in our room watching the monitor crying also. Lol (We're babies). Please, please give us some tips or advice on how to make this an easier transition. I know it won't be easy but I don't want to feel like I'm abandoning him. Thank you in advance!!!!!
