nervous to test again

So, I am 30 and my husband and I have been married almost 5 years. We wanted to wait for kids until the stress of finishing my masters was over. I stopped taking the pill two years ago and we have been actively trying to get pregnant for a year and it hasn't happened yet. This month my period was five days late and I decided to take my first ever pregnancy test. it was negative. My period still did not come. I had light spotting for about five days but it wasn't even enough to need more than a panty liners and my periods are usually fairly heavy. I usually have my period the first week of every month. I'm nervous to test again because the disappointment is pretty intense. Should I test again or should I wait and see if my period comes normal next month?
