Planned Cesarian birth with a bicornuate uterus

Diana

I had always imagined having a regular vaginal birth. I wanted to go into labor and push my baby out for the first time. However, I found out at 7 weeks pregnant that I have a bicornuate uterus (heart shaped with a septum almost dividing my uterus in half). My midwife assured me that I would more than likely have a normal pregnancy, but with the type of uterus deformation I have there could be growth restriction issues or my baby would be breech.

After being monitored with ultrasounds every 4-6 weeks after 20 weeks, I watched my baby girl grow and grow with thankfully no growth restrictions. She was growing big and beautiful. I however was having Braxton hick contractions since 15 weeks that were pretty miserable and the further along I got the more prevalent they became. If I had followed the more than 4 contractions in an hour rule, I would have been in labor and delivery triage seriously every night because that’s how often I had Braxton Hicks.

I had an ultrasound around 32 weeks and baby girl was still breech. Midwife assured me that most babies turn head down sometime after 32 weeks but in the back of my mind I knew she wasn’t going to turn. Come 35 weeks, I could still feel her head above my belly button and her feet in my side. I knew she was still breech. Confirmed via ultrasound, still breech. My midwife then transferred me to an OB for care because I would need a c-section which I was okay with having since I knew it was more than likely what was going to happen.

My OB was the nicest man ever, checked me at 36 weeks and handed me a calendar and told me to pick a day in my 39th week and he would take her out! I chose September 27, 2017.

3 weeks later comes September 27th and my husband and I go to the hospital at 5am knowing that in a couple hours we would have our girl in our arms. It still hasn’t hit us that today was the day! I get scrubbed down and hooked up to an IV with fluid since I wasn’t allowed to eat or drink since midnight the night before.

7:15am they wheel me into the OR and prep me for surgery. They leave my husband behind to get dressed to come into the operating room. The anesthesiologist gives me my spinal anesthesia and my legs slowly fall asleep until I had no feeling. The doctors and nurse staff introduce themselves and begin the surgery! I’m panicking because my husband still isn’t in the room! I remind a nurse like hey wheres alex?! The nurse runs and grabs him quickly. I ask my husband if they have cut me open yet and he says “oh yeah! They are elbow deep in there.” I ask him to take pictures which he tried to and failed because there are too many people standing in the way.

7:57am I feel one final jiggle of my belly as the nurse pushes down on my stomach and out came my baby girl Delilah Jane! 7lbs 8oz. They cleaned her off put her on my chest as they closed me up.

In the recovery room I breastfed her right away and she never left my chest. It was an amazing experience. Having a c-section was also a very pleasant experience and it didn’t hurt nearly as much as everyone told me it would. I was able to walk around the same day. I healed very quickly and my scar is tiny and very low.

Delilah Jane is now almost 4 months and the biggest blessing in our lives!
