Snapchat streaks a bit overrated and kinda pointless?

I personally don't understand the concept of sending someone a snap just to say "Streak" what are you gaining from it besides a number. I'm not trying to be a negative Nancy but I tend to see people literally just send someone a Snapchat that says streak. There's no conversation, you're literally building a score with someone just because. Teen girls get excited over a streak but is there really a lot of meaning behind it? I'd think if someone sent me a snap about our streak that literally reads "streak" they're sending it to multiple people. I wouldn't think it was pointless if the streaks consisted of a new snap for everyone apart of your streak.
