Depression Meds??

Question

Okay. Anyone who is on prescription meds for their anxiety or depression, how did you know it was time to get them?? Or how long did it take you to get medication prescribed to you?

I’ve had anxiety my whole life and bpd, a series of eating disorders and ptsd. I got medications prescribed to me right away. It took me YEARS to find the right medication.  But honestly it all depends on you and how you feel on medication in general as an option. If you think you should try some sort of medication try talking to your doctor about your worries, anxieties, etc. If it’s anything out of control like I was they will prescribe you something. I’m glad you asked this question! If you’re not already seeing a counselor, it’s a good idea to do so and ask them at the end of the session. I just got prescribed meds for depression and anxiety because I have faced a trauma in addition to a death in my family. So my depression recently became debilitating, due to situational factors. I don’t believe you have to wait for a trauma though to get medical help. But my therapist said that because I’ve had two traumatic events happen and I’m trying to finish my last semester in school, it’s good to think about taking meds just so I can get through the day and do my school work to graduate in May. Medication does not solve all of your problems so regular therapy really really helps but it improves your mood to allow you to get shit done so your depression doesn’t rule your whole life! Well I have had anxiety for the past 3 years. I saw a counceler for like 2 years and within the first like 2 months they recommended meds. The meds I take are anti-depressants because I would over think things and as a result become suicidal. The meds basically just calm my emotions so when I am sad I am not VERy sad ect. It didn’t take much to get them I just had to be assessed and shit. Btw I only have anxiety now but it is quite mild and only usually get anxious around my period due to PMS. Still take the meds now though xx good luck and god bless

I knew it was time to seek help when my depression was interfering every day life. I go catatonic in states of extreme depression and my other half would routinely have to pick me up off the floor. If depression or anxiety is making you change how you act or feel it’s probably time. 
As for how long until I was prescribed, it’s usually the first day you talk with a psychiatrist. Which I would recommend that over a general practitioner since they have the extra training. It can take a long time to get into a psychiatrist.
