Does he Love you? Please I need Opinions

I was in a relationship about two years ago with my first everything...it ended really badly when he put his hands on me. I made sure his first time was his LAST time... I don't understand why you would hit a girl you love ,no matter what the reason is.. Some people tell me that he loved me so much that he didn't know how to handle his emotions, but other people saying that he didn't love me enough to hurt me..What do you guys think?? SN: now he's dating this girl that was supposed be my "Friend" a few months after..now he's beating her and she won't or can't leave (karma is a bitch).... Does a person loves you, even though he hits you?
