what do you think about someone who self-harms?

I have as well for the past I don't know 6 years. I know what goes through the mind of some. I have experienced more than a 16 year old should. but I want to know what you think about someone who self-harms.. and write a response of your honest opinion

More often then not someone who self harms has a mental disorder such as depression or bipolar disorder and needs to get help wether it be therapy, medication, or a combination of both. They need love and support not being told to “get over it” or that they are just attention seekers.

I self harmed A LOT when I was younger. It hurt when people would do it and wave it around to try to get people to feel bad for them- it branded everyone who struggled with it as attention seekers. I always hid mine and it was a legitimate addiction for me. With time I got out of it, and I still have my moments when I think about it but I know now that it was stupid and a horrid way to cope.

if someone self harms and they post it all over social media i think they just want attention bc my sister used to self harm and she used to hide her scars. Most people who self harms don't want other to see it.

I use to self harm. My husband has helped me a lot in that process. I have bad anxiety and I have depression.
So I have bad days were i want to. It’s just to feel something because I always feel so numb.
Some want attention, I knew a few girls who would post about it on social media just for people to talk to her. Yet whenever you talked about hospital or getting her help she stopped for a month. Erase pictures.
Some feel like it’s the only way to let out their emotion. The only way to feel something. 
Then there are the very few who think that nobody cares enough and it’s just their way of wanting to kill them selves but just haven’t gotten the heart to do so.
I’ve talked to plenty of people and saved lives of many. 
I use to cut and it got so bad I would do it in my sleep. 
I never wanted someone to feel the way I did. To experience the pain and the unwanted feeling. To feel alone and no one understands. 
I help who I can and let them know that they aren’t alone. That it’s okay to feel the way their feeling but someone always cares. 
Some people only feel like they have me. For every friend I have I treat them like family. 
I care for them and love them.

I self harmed an extreme amount until very recently (and honestly I could say I still am in some ways) and the best explanation I've ever heard for self harm is that it's a way to offer an easy explanation for the pain someone is already feeling mentally and emotionally. emotional pain is often hard and exhausting to process, and self-harm offers an easy to understand, physical explanation for that pain. that said, self harm is still an unhealthy coping mechanism and I believe that you will be able to heal!! even just the fact that you're reaching out to a community about self harm shows that you are working hard and moving forward. I did it because I was depressed and had a lot of trauma from childhood abuse. I did it because I had no understanding of healthy coping methods and it was the only thing I felt like I had control over. Many years of therapy and counselling later, I know it was wrong but I don't feel any guilt. I coped the only way I knew how, and it wasn't something I showed off to anyone.

Some people actually do it for attention but the majority are ashamed of it and don't want anyone to know. i used to hit myself(i couldn't cut because i have plaque psoriasis and my wounds turn into psoriasis.) hitting myself would relieve some of the pain i felt on the inside. i also have mental illness but a lot of people judge without trying to understand the why. hard for us to discuss, easy for other to dismiss/judge. medication does wonders sometimes but all we can do is offer love and support!

None of these are answers I’d give. I self harmed for years to cope with everything I was dealing with. Physically opening myself up was the only way I could let out the pain and emptiness I was feeling. I still relapse sometimes, but I have people in my life who help me get through those moments.
The only thing I say to/about people who I know hurt themselves is that they’re not alone and that they’re worth so much more than the pain. And I tell them to get help.

I used to mainly because I could t deal with the pain inside I had a very rough childhood and couldn’t really cope so I put the pain on the outside instead of keeping it in

i self harmed as a way to be able to control something in my life. i was mentally and emotionally abused growing up in a cult. 
it helped my mental space even though it was physically damaging. i was super grateful to get out of that situation and seek help.
