What to buy before baby shower?

So this is my second pregnancy however my daughter just turned 6 years old. Needless to say, I don’t have ANY baby items. My husbands mom and my sister are insisting on throwing me a baby shower but not until after the baby is born so everyone can meet her. It’s been a while since I’ve had a baby so I need some advice on the necessities I will need to have ready for her while we wait for the baby shower to happen. With my first pregnancy I had a shower before the baby arrived so I already had an idea of what I still needed but since this shower will be post-birth, I need to be prepared. Help! Lol.

I’m doing a shower before and a sip-and-see diaper keg after baby for people to meet her. Maybe you can talk them into that? Diaper keg is more for daddy, but the diapers will be nice to have!

I think you might have to step in here and ask for the shower ahead of time. I know its difficult to take a bit of control when people are doing something kind and thoughtful for you, but a post shower isn't ideal. 
You will likely be exhausted, you're going to need a lot of things right away and therefore gifts will be superfluous instead of necessities (costing you more money), and lastly if the shower is going to be a huge affair that means loads of people. It's not good for a baby's delicate immune system to be interacting with that many people so early. Yes a visitor or 2 well supervised, with receiving blankets is fine. But 30 plus people all competing to touch your baby, kiss it, street clothes...not a good idea.

this is our first---I have been buying 90 %second hand and 10%clearance. necessities And nursery decor. having a sip and see/diaper party approx 1 month after.

I would speak up if you want a shower before the baby is born . If not get the things you need 
Burp clothes 
Diapers 
Wipes 
Clothes 
Socks 
Car seat 
Bottles 
Pacifiers
Swaddle Blankets 
 We are doing our baby shower a bit backwards lol both my boys are 8 & 5 so it’s been a while . But my husband and I already bought everything for our 3rd boy .we didn’t want to wait on others to buy what we wanted , and I am very very picky on what I wanted and didn’t want to ask others to buy it and if I didn’t get what I ask for I would have been so  disappointed and sad and then had to go buy it after anyways . But my husband and I don’t like to depend on others so we are only asking for people to bring clothes and baby toys for our shower .

I would probably just get a few outfits, pack.of diapers, small pack of wipes bottles if formula feeding and a pack of swaddle wraps. Other than a crib that should get you through comfortable until the shower. I echo the other ladies though  - that's kind of a strange thing for them to do.

The basics you would need at birth would be:
Clothes
Diapers
Burp rags
A few swaddles/swaddling blankets
Car seat
Bassinet/crib/pack-n-play
Bedding 
A couple bottles
Possibly formula (i breastfed and just had free samples)
You could register for anything else.

I mean, it’s hard to know. Because you still want people to have things they can buy for you but you NEED certain things for them right away. Obviously things like diapers, wipes, bottles, at least SOME clothes, definitely a car seat. You could maybe hold off on a crib if you have a bassinet they can sleep in for at first. I’m sure people will buy you clothes, baby towels and cloths, hopefully they’ll buy some diapers too. Not sure if you’ll want to use pacifiers but I’d get 2 at least. Basically you’ll just need the absolute necessities (depending on how long between the birth, and the shower) Honestly though, if I wasn’t going to have a shower until after baby was born, I wouldn’t bother. I’d buy everything I need for myself so there’s no surprises. I don’t know how people survive like that lol.
