13.5 mo old & Tantrums

I feel like I’m at such a loss. My guy has been throwing tantrums left and right when I tell him no or don’t let him do something he’s not supposed to or that may hurt him. He screams at the top of his lungs and THROWS himself on the ground and thrashes around, he will get up still crying and bite and throw anything in sight. Is this normal? How do you handle these tantrums? I try to ignore them other than like making sure he doesn’t hurt himself and won’t give him attention until he is done with that major wave of emotion and I’ll talk to him as if he can understand trying to explain to him why I said no or whatever. Idk I just feel like I’m not handling this right. Anyone have advice/experience? I’m a FTM. I wish I could post the video of his tantrum yesterday for an example lol. Is this just the toddler phase?
