When to switch to toddler bed?

When did y’all switch your child to a toddler bed or anything other than a crib? My little guy is really tall and he is only 10 months and he is already kicking the sides and having a hard time getting comfy. So when should I look into switching him to a toddler bed? 1 year? 18 months? What did y’all do? Thanks you!

I'm a mom of 3 and I don't switch until mine either climb out or need to start using the restroom at night. My 3 year old is still in his crib! Both my boys are quite tall too,  97th and 89th percentile. But the issue is,when they reach age 2 or so (the terrible 2s) they start rebelling bedtime and especially naps. It's so much easier to just keep the crib in my opinion.

I converted my son’s crib to a toddler bed a couple months after he turned two. He has always been very tall for his age but never tried to climb out. I switched to a toddler bed at that time because he started to hate bedtime. Once he could get in and out on his own he was happy. I upgraded him to a twin size bed at age 3.

I believe “the rules” say you should switch them when they start to climb out. You can get a conversion kit which means you take the front rail off and put in a half-rail.

I switched when I caught my daughter about to climb out of her crib with the mattress as low as it would go, so about 18 months. she was still tiny and couldn't even see over the top of the crib rail, but apparently she was a daredevil climber.

I didn’t bother with a toddler bed, all of my kids went straight from to cot to a single low profile bed at around the age of 2.

My daughter is super tall and was climbing out by 16 months.  We put her in a toddler bed for safety but it was a struggle till she turned about 2.  She just wasn’t mature enough yet but safety rules.

Most toddler beds literally are the same size as a crib, my stepsons use the same size mattress that my daughter uses, it all just depends on when you think they're ready

Mom of 4 I did at 18mths with my oldest 3 I will do the same for my 4th in a few months. My kids all did great at 18mths. When they can climb or almost climb out of a crib it's usually good to move them. My kids are like monkeys and climb everything. I'd rather them be closer to the ground at that point.
