Pumping @ work, may not be an option?!

Question

I am around 2mths and already thinking ahead. I am still in new stage at my new job. I work admissions in an ED at a hospital. I do overnights and only 1 at the desk; which means only person on in whole hospital who knows how to do my job during my shift. When I go back to work, I am baffled as to how I would even pump because there is no one to relieve me while I go do so. Any suggestions, tips or advice on how to approach topic to my boss? I haven't shared news yet til I get closer to end of 1st trimester or start showing, it's my 3rd.

Say this with me- It’s not your job to cover your job. You are within your legal rights to have reasonable accommodations to pump until your baby is 1. The hospital can cross train someone to do the admissions so you can pump or they can put you in a different position. Someone should be able to cover your job. What happens if you call in? Don’t they float someone to do it?

Who covers when you take lunch or go to the bathroom? Legally, they have to give you breast feeding breaks. I work in healthcare too though so I know how it is. I'm nervous about being able to get my breaks when we are short staffed.

Well most states have laws to where your job has to allow you to pump. Wether it’s paid or not is up to them but they have to allow you to and they have to provide you a space to do so. Look up the laws in your state and then once you’ve had your baby and go back to work inform your boss you’re going to need to pump every so often. They can’t fire you for it

Honestly, it may be awkward, but I’ve pumped on the go or while doing other things by using a hands free nursing bra and a cover.

lol I hope you have better luck than I did. I pumped 9 ounces each pumping session.  it hurt soo bad. I was miserable. my boss literally asked if I could wait (while my breasts were leaking in my work shirt!) then she said my pumping takes to long and made me clock out every 2 hours when I needed to pump. I ended up getting fired over it. and because I was broke, I had no money to get a lawyer and they refused to give me corporates info.

I work retail as a manager, and will have at least one closing shift and one full day shift where I’m the *only* Manager. I’m not sure what I’m going to do either ☹️

I am a triage nurse.   I seriously have my pump and stuff in my cabinet in my triage room.   3-4 times during the day I close the door and let charge know give me 10 mins (I work 12 hour shifts).  There is absolutely no reason a charge nurse shouldn't know how to put a patient's name into the system to get things going and you can do the rest when you are done pumping.  It was one of the first things I was taught in the EMR

Legally they have to allow you breaks to pump so you can feed your child. I am a nurse at a very busy sports medicine clinic, and I know some days it’s harder for me to get away to pump. But my boss and the doctor I work directly with never give me any problems when I say hey I need to go pump; it’s a short break they can train someone to cover you.

Never say never. Talk to your boss they can work something out, especially if you stick to a schedule. I was super busy at work and would only work in 15 min sessions but got a system down. Also look into freemies, you can secretly pump with them. I think that's what they are called. Good luck! Your job should be understanding, especially in a hospital. My job is a nurse and they are so pro breast feeding it's also annoying. :)
