Black history month
** as people seem to be missing my point - I think it’s important to learn about all year round- I disagree with segregating it to just one month ***
Okay. Wanting honest opinions.
I teach six year olds in a International school in Japan. Most of the teachers are American and I’m British. I have majority Japanese students, 3 Americans and one other Asian. I am very aware of cultural identity and ensure all races, particularly ones of the children in my class are discussed and learned about through lessons, stories, displays etc.
I’ve been told by admin that one of my parents will get very upset if I don’t cover black history month.
Personally I really disagree with dedicating a month to a particular race. I view it as further segregation and I think of it from my kids view point - when is Japanese history month? White history month? (I know I know- I’m rationalising it from the view of a 6 year old).
I taught MLK and Rosa Parks already this year- 2/3 weeks each in depth through reading writing drama geography history and art. I make sure I teach about significant figures of each race in my room. I’m actually struggling more about Japanese history and people.
Shall I go against my professional view to please parents🤷🏻♀️
