Blood work costing a fortune?

I have pretty good health insurance. Last month I had my routine blood work down for pregnancy confirmation and a CBC to make sure my levels are all healthy. I just got a bill for close to $3,000 for these tests, my insurance already covered 60%, so it was originally even more than that. I’m sorry, but what? Why would a simple blood test cost that much? Do you think this is a mistake or are pregnancy blood tests seriously that expensive?

Are you sure insurance has paid their part already? I often get bill where the insurance side just hasn’t paid yet and it just takes a bit to be applied.

I work in an OB office, so maybe I can help. I’d bring the bill in to the office & ask them to help, even though they may still tell you to call your insurance. Usually when patients get a bill like that, it’s because of either Cystic Fibrosis testing (usually mandatory in new pregnancy labs if you’re Caucasian) & Sickle Cell (if african American). Insurances WONT cover these tests but they’ll cover all the other labs oddly. Call billing, stand your ground. Make the OB office call & send in any documentation that these tests were MEDICALLY necessary.

No experience with this but that doesn’t seem right... not even after insurance covers bc typically insurance have a cap on what youre required to pay out of pocket through a year w benefits then they pick up at 100%. I eouldncal the dr THEN call insurance to see whatsgoing on

call the number that its on the bill and ask i was charge 200 something in sep i called em and they just aske for my insurance number and all was fixed i've never paid that much for blood work.

You have to pay for blood tests in the states?? That’s rediculous. In Canada it’s free!

I'm assuming you're in America?? 
I just went back and checked my insurance website for my explanation of benefits for my full blood panel at the beginning of my pregnancy- looks like BEFORE insurance, it cost $600. something seems wrong. I would call insurance first to see if they can check it and then call the doctor to ask how it was billed. I've had a few mistakes with billing throughout my pregnancy that I was able to get easily sorted out

That doesn’t sound right at all. The only blood tests I’ve heard of costing that much are once you get into the genetic screening like for Down Syndrome and Trisomy 18. Regular pregnancy confirmation and HCG levels shouldn’t cost that much. Call your doctor to confirm what tests were ordered and have them make sure they sent the right claim to your insurance.
