Miscarriage experiences?

Hello all. I am 5 weeks pregnant but think I may be having a miscarriage. Had an internal scan on Friday afternoon (which was too early to see anything) and immediately after started having period like cramping and back pain which I was told was normal. The next day I went for a short walk and had a gush of bright red blood. I went back home and showered, put a pad on and headed to the ER. I am still in hospital now but haven’t been given any answers. Just wondering why people experiences were with miscarriage. I expected painful cramping and heavy bleeding. But I’ve had no cramping at all since bleeding started. And other than the initial gush, the bleeding has been quite light. Bright red but only there when I wipe...but more than just spotting. Is this normal for a miscarriage? Is it on and off with the bleeding and does it not always cause pain? I am so confused.
