Boyfriend doesn’t know what he’s doing

Okay I’ve been dating my SO for a while now, but we haven’t gone very far. When things do get hot and heavy, his first instinct is to basically just finger me over my pants? Which isn’t that bad on its own, but he doesnt really know what’s going on down there. He’ll rub my pelvic bone just above my clit, and his hand motions are too fast and in the wrong spot. I really like him, but I don’t get any pleasure from that! How do I bring it up without making him feel bad? He doesn’t have any experience with this stuff, and I don’t want to hurt his feelings.
