Psych meds during pregnancy?

Question

Currently taking Cymbalta and TTC. Anyone have experience being on it and pregnant? Anyone given birth yet? I’d love any positive comments or to hear your experiences! My gyno is okay with it but my psychiatrist is a bit nervous because of my dose (80mg). Thanks in advance!

Your psychiatrist would be the doctor I’d trust with any type of mental health related medication. You don’t go to a dentist for a heart problem, why would you go to a OBGYN for a brain problem? I was on medication for most of my pregnancy and many months PP ( while breastfeeding). I’m not an expert on what is safe during pregnancy, or what meds could replace what you’re on while TTC. But I would 100% be working with your psychiatrist to come up with a plan before/during/after because you are at a high risk for both pre and post partum depression. Speaking from experience, you don’t want to not be ready.  Also, you’d get more help in a TTC room than here. And I wouldn’t trust any medical advice you get on her AT ALL.

I would ask both doctors if there are studies they can cite for you, or look for them yourself...google scholarly articles for cymbals during pregnancy ..or cymbala and the placental barrier, or something to that effect

I suppose the OB will advise on what is safe for the foetus and the psych on what is safe for you- so I would balance their opinions- but if your health is not looked after you run the risk of developing more serious issues and obviously that could effect the baby in the long run. Just check on articles on places like Pubmed to see if there are links with your particular medicine and foetal abnormalities but trust your psych ultimately- as they all have to attend medical training before becoming psychiatrists so they should have a good overall picture.
