What has been everyone's experience?

I'm looking to start birth control and have been strongly considering an IUD. Does it hurt to get put in place or removed? Did your periods stop? What have been the side effects? Has anyone had both the copper and hormonal to make a comparison?

Before I got my IUD I was on the shot and the pill... Honestly my body didn't react well with the hormones at all. So I got the copper T, I've had it in for 5 months now and it's so much better, I have no problems with it at all. It took my body 2 months to adjust to it. I have a bit more period cramps but it's not unbearable. It's not bad at all

I recommend you go on the pill first to see how your body works with the hormones. If you're good with it then go for the hormonal iud. Of you're not up for what happened while you're on the pill then go for the copper T, granted you will probably have a bit more period pains.

The pill will just give you an idea of what to expect, I'm not saying it'll be exactly like that. Just the advice my doctor gave me when I was deciding. I'm very happy with my copper T....at the end of the day, everyone's bodies react differently. Good luck.

First up I’m a 20 year old female who has been having their period for 6 years now. I have had one surgical abortion at 19 years old. I have tried many different types of pills and the injection.
It’s important to remember when reading posts like this that every body is different and your baby box may not behave in the same way as mine! I’m going to share my experience but always talk to a doctor and do plenty of research before you decide which one to get!
I’ve had both and honestly would recommend going for the hormonal over the copper.
The insertion process of both was pretty painful for me because I had a really stubborn cervix that liked to contract each time they tried to insert it, after that I had some normal period type cramps for the rest of the day and some spotting but that was about it! (Taking ibuprofen helps). It’s important to be prepared for it to hurt but don’t stress about it, most people are fine and even then it’s only for a brief minute. 
As for the experience afterwards, the copper coil was absolute hell for me. I had extreme cramps that left me limping as they radiated down my leg and I had the heaviest and longest period ever. I think it may have been too big for me because I hadn’t had a baby but who knows? I gave it a few months to settle but nothing worked so I switched it up. 
The mirena coil is much better for my body, I still get the cramps that shoot down my leg but they’re much less intense and bearable. My periods are a normal length for me (7-8 days) but are more of a spotting than a bleed. The hormones only circulate your uterus too which means you don’t have any extra hormones buzzing about your body (this was a huge plus in my case as I was a complete crazy bitch on the pill and injection). You go through your usual period mood swings but it’s all down to your own hormones and nothing artificial. It may be something to consider if you prefer being on hormonal birth control for other reasons such as acne, mood swings, depression etc.
Perks are that you don’t have to worry about taking a pill every day, it lasts 5-10 years (depending on the brand) and you can remove it at any time.

I got the mirena inserted today. For me it didn’t really hurt it was just uncomfortable. There was pressure and cramps. But I have had a vaginal birth before. Otherwise I’m looking forward to hopefully no periods or babies!

Just like others said, try the pill first. If you decide to get an IUD, ask your doctor to measure your uterus during USG - this is super important. If my doctor hadn't done that (and my previous doctor didn't, she just seemed to have chosen the IUD's size randomly 😐), he would have inserted IUD which is too big, which would result in severe cramps and maybe even expulsion. When I hear that Mirena and Paragard are offered to women who haven't given birth I'm like well... Paragard is 32mm×36mm, I don't know about Mirena, but for instance my uterus is tiny, 24mm×31mm, so as you can see it is beyond important for your doctor to measure your uterus. All the IUDs available in my country were too big for me, so my doctor ordered Novaplus T 380Cu Mini, which is 24mm×30mm I think? He had to order it from Spain but well, it was the only one that would fit me!

It does hurt when it’s hurt placed for a few days, but it’s SO worth it! I don’t get my period anymore. It’s good for FIVE YEARS! And you don’t have to remember a daily pill! After I got mine, I regretted not having got it sooner! I highly recommend them!
