How much time do I have to get some gates up!?

Is the gates for stairs? Or just to keep him out of certain areas? I put up gates as soon as my daughter could crawl. We have stairs and I use one to keep her out of the kitchen. 
Looks like he’ll be standing unassisted soon. Once my daughter could stand up in the middle of the living room without using anything, she was walking in about 3-4 weeks.

I put gates up when my baby started crawling. He started doing that before he could crawl. He did that pose around 7.5 months, crawled at 8.5 months, and walked at 12 months.
