Patriarchy in religion?

Do you think religion as a whole tends to be sort of patriarchal? Or like in some aspects religion gives men the “upper hand” in life?

I can’t speak for all religions, but I think there is often a difference between the way gender roles are intended in a religion and the way they are actually interpreted in certain situations and cultures. In other words, women do have equal rights in the religion, but these are not always respected in practice. Just my observation.

I think it has more to do with tradition than inequality. Duties and titles were assigned by skill. Women, as a whole, didn’t really consider trying anything other than what they were taught until these last few centuries. I believe the men were taken aback and were curious by this change in interest, but I’ve never been one to believe that men thought women were less than, just that they had different interests. When a men asks a woman to cook him something, in this age, often times, in her mind, he is disrespecting her and thinking she can’t amount to anything other than this. I think that most men have never even considered this perspective. He believes it was just a simple question/favor, which is exactly what it is.

For the vast majority of history, yes, and the practice that comes in most religions, yes. I come from a Christian background that was revolutionary in terms of women’s roles and placement in society (I know there’s disagreement with that so feel free to ask), but I know the Church has historically used different religious figures to control and lessen women and that the Church doesn’t always treat women as Christ did. The belief of Christianity would have been a no, but the practice of Christianity has to be a yes from me.
