I feel like when I get really close to finishing, the pressure is just too intense. This happens whether its by myself or with my boyfriend. Another post I read said that when I have an orgasm I’ll know, but I really can’t tell. Is there any way to orgasm without stopping short?

What you describe sounds like either getting close to a squirting orgasm (pressure building up, might even feel like you have to pee) or a clitoral orgasm (if it feels more like you're being tickled to death). I'm not a fan of clitoral orgasms during sex; most guys don't know how to do it wothout overstimulating me and making me hypersensitive. The feelings that accompany the plateau phase of a vaginal orgasm could also feel overwhelming. My problem is that when I'm on top, I tend to back off and slow down when I get close to orgasm, so for me, it helps to have my partner on top when I get close so he can push through my hesitance and force me to cum lol so to speak. So if that's the case, I recommend having your partner on top and tell him keep going, don't stop. Sometimes I need him to go faster or deeper to push me over the edge (depends on the position and how you feel at the time). Sometimes I need him to keep a steady rhythm and then stop moving when I'm actually in the middle of orgasm (otherwise it will mess it up). Don't be afraid to ask for what you need.

You might know; you might not. There are many different types of orgasms. Some hit you like a ton of bricks . Some are quiet and subtle. Some sneak up on you out of nowhere and some have a seemingly endless buildup and anticlimactic finish. It's really common for girls to think they've never had an orgasm, and only with a few years experience do they realize that they actually have had orgasms; they just weren't sure if what they were feeling qualified.  
Here are my tips for how to know: 
*Pay attention to bodily sensations (somatic awareness). Some orgasms feel like a warm wave travelling down your body, or a tingle that starts in your toes and seems to move up (caused by a sudden drop in blood pressure). 
*‎Muscle contractions. This a big one. This is probably the #1 way men (who are experienced enough and aware or in tune with you) can tell when you cum and if you're faking or not. You can voluntarily squeeze your PC muscles (kegels), and sometimes this can even help you orgasm during sex, but a voluntary contraction is much different from involuntary contractions. Right before you cum, you or your partner might notice your vaginal muscles "clamp down" or tense up. A man may remark at how tight you are. 
During an orgasm, and often for a few minutes afterwards, your muscles will often "pulse" with involuntary contractions in a rhythmic pace. Sometimes the pace is very rapid and this is hard to fake by sqeezing your muscles voluntarily. This is often visible from the outside, but you have to look from an angle most of us are unable to achieve without the help of a mirror or extra pair of eyes. 
If you are feeling brave, you can record yourself masturbating with a camera near your feet, or use a mirror to look. Make sure lighting is good. After you orgasm, you will notice involuntary muscle contractions around the vagina make your vulva and even anus twitch every few seconds for up to several minutes afterwards, even after you stop touching yourself. 
*‎Hypersensitivity to touch - following a clitoral orgasm, you may immediately feel so sensitive to your clit being touched that you instinctively pull away or squirm if anything continues to stimulate your clit. The feeling is overwhelming on the same level of being tickled to death. #1 sign of a clitoral orgasm. 
*Pay attention to your breathing. When you're getting worked up, your breathing may become heavier, even if you're not really physically exerting yourself. When you finally cum, you may suddenly notice you are panting and in the next few seconds to minutes your respiratory rate will slowly return to normal. You may also notice you tend to hold your breath for no apparent reason while cumming. 
*‎Same with pulse (though this can be more difficult to measure). After an orgasm you may suddenly realize your heart is pounding (once your bodily awareness returns).
*‎Sudden shifts in mental state, energy level or mood. Some orgasms build up strong, but don't end in an explosive feeling so much as dropping off and ending in you suddenly feeling tired. If you suddenly feel the urge to stop and want to fall asleep, this may have actually been one of those subtle, relaxing orgasms. Other feelings you may experience: A rush of euphoria, feeling "high," confused, or "out of it," finding difficulty in expressing yourself verbally. Some people even go cross-eyed for a few seconds. Sometimes the release of pent-up energy and surge of hormones manifests itself in crying for no apparent reason. You might also suddenly feel guilty (this happens more likely if you were masturbating to porn or imagining a rather extreme scenario, and as your awareness, sense of morality in your prefrontal cortex, and inhibitions return, your brain makes you feel guilty about what you just got off to). 
*‎Body fluids. Not many women are "squirters," and those who are won't always "squirt" when they come, but if you do, this is a tell-tale sign. Scientists still debate whether female ejaculate is a unique fluid released from the Skene's glands, or simply a small amount of urine released resulting from the overstimulation and fatigue of pelvic nerves [urethral/bladder's parasympathetic continence-control nervous circuits of S1-2's (GVA-GSE) pudendal nerves, S2-4's pelvic (GVA-GVE) splanchnic nerves, L2's sympathetic lumbar splanchinc (GVE)/orgasmic nerves] from the clit/G-spot that cause momentary incontinence as the bladder misfires, as many studies find "female ejaculate" contains at least some urine, but regardless of where it comes from or what it is comprised of, it's a sign of orgasm.
*‎My final tip: let yourself breathe and be vocal. I understand sometimes this is difficult when other people are home and you don't want than to know what's going on (and the anxiety of being "caught," in and of itself, can interfere with orgasm). But when you allow yourself to release all that energy through your breath, sometimes it can help you get over the edge, as well as help you know when you have. When I was young, I remember I used to hold my breath while having sex with my boyfriend. I was trying so hard to be quiet, I held back, and sometimes held my breath so long I almost blacked out a few times and it seemed to stall or stagnate my orgasms. Once I allowed myself to express my feeling vocally, I came much better. Don't worry about what you sound like. Women in porn are acting; we don't all sound like that. When you're really enjoying yourself, you may hear yourself make noises you didn't even know you were capable of making! Animalistic grunts and cries and low groans and screaming so hard your voice cracks. Don't worry; your partner will take it as a compliment.

I have this exact same problem. When I start getting close, I get overwhelmed with all the sensations and start trying to wriggle away from my BF. I've told him multiple times he needs to just hold me down and not stop what he's doing unless I explicitly say so. That hasn't really worked because I guess I'm good at wriggling. I still have no idea if I've ever orgasmed, but I know I've had a lot of close calls!
