is breastfeeding meant to absolutely fucking kill???

my son is a week old tomorrow. when I first latch him onto my breast the pain is awful. its about a good 8/10 stinging deep intense god awful pain.. this lasts about 10 seconds then it goes away. the latch is fine I've been told and he has a big mouthful of boob and it looks great. the pain goes away once the milk starts to flow. but its got me dreading every feed. seems to be worse on my right boob. his lips are flanged out and I fed my last baby for over a year and honestly I can't remember if I got this pain and if so how long it went for..
