Warning: Always do your research
My 21-month old son was prescribed Augmentin antibiotics for an ear infection. In the past he’d only ever been on regular amoxicillin. I’d read that Augmentin can cause an upset tummy, but the dosage he was prescribed seemed excessive: 13 mL when normally it’s only been 7 mL with other medicines. Well this morning I gave him his second dosage which he fought hand tooth and nail. Usually he’s ok with medicine but this one didn’t taste good and was so much. He seemed miserable afterwards and threw up a couple times and was just pale and pitiful looking. I called the on call doc and she said that dosage seems way too high for his weight and to only give him half of that. It was the other doctor in the practice who prescribed him the wrong dosage. I felt terrible for causing this unnecessary discomfort to my baby on top of his ear infection. It also scared the crap out of me of what if it had been worse and had been something that could seriously harm him 😞 I googled a normal dosage for an adult which is 500 mg/12 hours and he was taking 650 mg/12 hours 😞 Please always double check things for yourselves mamas. If something seems off to you, don’t hesitate to ask when it comes to your babies. This was eye opening and I’m so grateful it didn’t turn out worse.
