Visitors at the Hospital?

Are you accepting visitors at the hospital? And if so, when?
With my first we lived in a different state than all of our family, and we loved that it was just us when he was born, so I already know I don’t want anyone there until after baby is born, but is it rude to say no visitors until we’re home?

We are only allowing the grandparents to visit in the hospital. All other visitors will have to wait until a week later. This is our first and we really want space to bond and adjust to life with a baby without having to manage visitors.

This time around once baby has been born and nurses and been bathed my husband will go get our 2 year old (depending on time of day). He will be the first to meet the baby. Then after that we are only allowing grandparents until we go home. I would rather focus on skin to skin and nursing my baby in those first days. And of course letting my 2 year old visit and be there with my husband and I some of the time. Whichever you choose, make it clear before you go in to deliver so they can prepare and not be upset and forceful when you go in to labor.

I had 2 home births and both times I had company after about 8 hours. I had a shower to clean myself up right after birth and then just rested. When people come over I’ve never offered food or drinks. People know where to find cups and if they are hungry they have always brought food along with them enough to share with us also. Also people were good about baby’s need to nurse and would only hold baby for a little while so I can keep having lots of bonding with baby. I’ve personally never been overly protective of keeping my children to myself as it takes a village to raise them I want them to know their village.

No one is entitled to see you or your baby until you’re 100% ready. Both my birth and breastfeeding instructors have discouraged having tons of visitors the first day. In hospital because you have so much to do—baby has tests, there’s the breastfeeding ‘golden hour’ and you both need to get cleaned up. They said don’t invite anyone you don’t want to breastfeed in front of (lol that’s my whole family). I don’t want anyone visiting until a few days after I am home.

We only allowed close friends and immediate family after delivery. Even coming home I’ve only allowed a few. 
Stick to your guns. You’re uncomfortable and sore. Do what is best for you.

My immediate family will be at the hospital for labor and delivery, only my boyfriend and my sister will be in the room during the delivery. After that I am ok with visitors as long as they bring food!
