Tips to put baby down sleepy but awake?

Hi everyone,
My LO is 4 and half months. I have been trying to get him used to being put down sleepy but awake for about 2 weeks now. I have a nap and bedtime routine going as well. Every time we finish the routine and I get him sleepy in my arms I go to try to carefully put him down. 9 times out of 10 he will wake up completely and start to cry so I have to start all over again until I basically try 3 times and then give up and put him down completely passed out. I have tried to let him just lay there and cry back to sleep with me there trying to soothe him but he will cry for 30 minutes if I don't pick him back up again. What am I doing wrong? Any tips or suggestions would be awesome!

I wasn’t able to successfully do this until my daughter was 11 months. She would just scream and seemed terrified. But now she’s a champ. I just turn on the same baby lullaby every night and she lays down without a fuss. I didn’t do anything different than when I tried when she was younger. One day she was ok with it and here we are.

I was the same. I started sleep training at 4 months. She has her bed routine. She has bath, bottle, book and bed. We started off terrible and I thought it was never going to change but it did she now puts herself to sleep and sleeps through all night. I started putting her down wake, she would cry, I would wait 5 mins go in calm her down sing to her then put her back down (no longer than 5mins to calm her) and walk out, she started crying again so I’d wait 10 mins and then go in and calm and so on till she fell asleep. The first few nights it was long and tiring but I stuck with it and slowly the times went down to 10mins and now I don’t have to go back in and calm her at all.  Hope this helps you. It helped me and now I have her asleep by 6:30/7pm and have the evening to relax or sleep.

Sometimes my son does this and I’ll turn him in his side and pat his back until he’s asleep then I’ll slowly turn him back to laying flat.

I’ve been trying to get my daughter used to this as well. I’ve been most successful if she’s sleepy and I lay her down but put my hand on her chest with one hand and rub her head for a minute with the other. I’ve been progressing to less and less time doing these two things and will hopefully not need to do them much longer.

My son is eleven months and this still doesn't work for him. Honestly, it's not a big deal for me to nurse him to sleep and then lay him down once he's asleep. I fully trust in his ability to fall asleep on his own as he gets bigger. I saw you were concerned about baby falling asleep on you but not staying asleep in the stroller; baby wearing was a life saver for me. I'd put my son in the carrier start walking around Target and he'd be sound asleep within a few minutes. I then finished my shopping with a snoozing baby strapped too my chest 😉

I started at 6 weeks with my son. I lay him in the crib while he's awake but you can tell he's getting tired like rubbing his eyes or something. if he cries, I don't go back. when I first lay him down I may place my hand on his chest if he seems to get fussy. but now at 3 months he does just fine. also turning a mobile on may help too. they need to learn to put themselves to sleep and be able to comfort themselves.
