Would you be offended?
Some quick background, my mom is Swedish and some of my cousins are mixed as my aunt is black. I recently attended a wedding in Sweden with my one cousin, who is a competitive dancer, and one of her Dad (my moms brother’s) Swedish friends was chatting with us and joked her good dancing skills must have come from her moms side.
We end the conversation a few minutes later and my cousin was pissed, attesting he was racist and was saying she had got her rhythm from her mom’s side because her mom is black. I had seen it more of a joke saying from her dads old friend saying he wasn’t a good dancer and I was told, “well you wouldn’t get it because you’re not black.” 🤨
Like, I was there for the conversation, and even saying he did jokingly mean it that way...um I get that saying black people are good dancers is a stereotype but it’s not like it’s a negative thing to say. She was literally to the point where she refused to dance when he was dancing because she wouldn’t be on the dance floor with a racist. Come on. Am I being insensitive or is she being absurd?
EDIT: I’m not trying to argue if positive stereotypes are bad. In this situation I am saying I don’t think he meant it as her being black but as a joke for her dad and think it’s a little overkill to call him a racist because of this and then not want to be anywhere near him the rest of the night.
