Hoping this doesn’t come across rude?

Question

A woman posted a car seat on a yard sale site on Facebook and I happened to notice the dates. I hate to come across as condescending or anything rude, but posting car seats isn’t the best scenario, especially when a lot of people don’t really know much other than it being a great deal. I privately messaged her too, so she didn’t feel attacked. I sincerely am just trying to be helpful.

She responded and was super nice about it. She said that she was aware but didn’t realize most other people wouldn’t know that.. so she appreciated my message and said she’s still going to sell it and just let people know. I personally wouldn’t buy a used car seat either because who knows if it’s been in any type of accident. But for some people, that’s their only choice due to finances. Anyway, it’s nice to know how many of you ladies appreciated this. I know, I definitely would have. Especially if I didn’t already know. Car seat safety is super important! And there’s always something new to learn.

No I don’t think that’s rude. I think it’s actually very nice. I have seen people be really awful and condescending about car seats and people who don’t know everything about them. This is kind and informative.

i think thats great. i bought 2 used car seats for my twins not knowing about the expirations. i didnt know car seats expired. they were both expired and i was so mad. im hoping the lady didnt know and now realizes and will take it down.but who knows i always wondered if the lady who sold ones to me knew

I think you said it very appropriately and kindly.
But I personally would never buy a used car seat. You don’t know the history behind the car seat, as in you don’t know if it was in a car accident and the seller is just trying to make a quick buck off it. If it’s in an accident, it’s no longer deemed safe- no different than using it passed the expiration date.
I’d rather be safe & broke, than have to worry & wonder about the history of it.
Everyone has their own opinions though, so to each’s own 🤷🏽‍♀️

Things often “expire” as a way for companies to make more money. If the car seat hasn’t been in an accident I’m sure it’s more than fine and I think you were a little nosy.

I think you handled that great. if she comes back snappy that's on her but i would appreciate the message. also I didn't know there was an expiration date on carseats other then recalls and really old ones... so I just learned something new! :)

I always comment on used car seat sales posts and say “what’s the expiration date?”
I have zero interest in buying one used, but I want the women that are going to spend their money on it to know that the seat does expire and when it’s going to. It seems like people often leave out the expiration dates in their sales posts. I know the general rule is six years after manufacturing.

I tried doing the same once. someone was selling a car seat which we had the samd for our daughter once, which had been recalled a few months before, so I let her know it's been recalled and isn't safe and got a very snotty reply telling me to mind my own business.. I'm glad it didn't go that way for you and she was nice about your message :)

Your 100 percent right. A lot of people do not know the basics of car seat safety and a lot of them are parents so I do the same thing because knowledge is power right! Lol fellow parents reach out to me about stuff like this because they know I over research everything, sometimes they don’t like what I say but hey, they asked!
