long term relationship breakup

I have been thinking about this for a while now and I want to break up with my boyfriend of 6 years. we do have a child together(shes 2) so I don't want to prolong this and just talk to him. I'm terrified and Im not sure when I plan on doing this or what to say.

I hope he understands and in time, we could be friends again. I dont want to break his heart but THIS is what is best.

does anyone have any tips? this is my first real relationship. someone please tell me how to go about this or how you broke up with your baby's dad. :(

also I'm not looking for any advice concerning our daughter. we have that handled, but I appreciate it.
