ECI Speech Therapy?

So to make a long story short, my 18 month-old had his check-up today. He only knows three words (dog, cat, and stop), so I was not shocked when his doctor said he was referring him to ECI for an evaluation. I was kind of expecting it. I know the evaluation takes place here at home, but those of you who have gone through this, what happens after the evaluation and what are your experiences with it?

At my son’s 2-year check-up, I mentioned to the doctor that my husband was concerned about his lack of speech. My son didn’t say much and what he did say didn’t come out clearly enough for others to understand. Being his mom, I knew what a lot of the “words” (read: word-like sounds) meant. Doc recommended speech therapy, but I wasn’t convinced.
As everyone always says, children develop at different rates. We never did take our son to speech therapy or even have him evaluated, but did put more emphasis on clearly stating our own words and working with him on pronunciation of his words. Now, at almost 3.5, he talks non-stop and can be easily understood (having full conversations) by most people.
If you are concerned, and feel in your heart that your child needs assistance, move forward with the assessment and therapy. But do make sure you go with your gut... mother’s intuition is real and you know your child better than anyone.

I’ll be going through the same on Friday. Our 18 month old literally has zero words. So I know it’s coming. My first had an evaluation for it as well. They wanted to do speech therapy 2 times per month. Not really sure what happens there because we couldn’t afford the $400 a month they wanted. Our older one just started talking at around 2. Now he never stops at almost 3.

I asked for further evaulation at my son’s 18 month checkup and our ped practically laughed at us and said its still very early! 🤷🏼‍♀️. She said they may consider an eval at the 2 year appt, but that many boys dont speak until 2.5-3. Who knows!
