Too many expectations?

Do you think a guy should ask a girl to be in a relationship, or people should just go with the flow. I think i have gotten into a relationship but since the guy has never really asked me to be his i am abit confused. I feel like that the right thing to do is for him to ask me properly. What do you think ladies? I dont want to be taken for granted
