When should I start seeing a gynecologist?

I’ve always been curious on when I should start seeing a gynecologist. I read online most people see one by the time they’re 21 for the first time. I don’t really have a close female relative since my mom died in November 2017 so I’m really at a lost. 
I’ve never been to a gynecologist before. I’m 18, turning 19 in August. I’ve been sexually active since April 2017. I’ve always been curious on when and if I should’ve been to one by now. I’ve never had any problems that made me go. There were times where I almost went to a doctor but they would go away when I look up doctors near me. I don’t like bothering people so I tend to wait about a week before doing something about problems I have. 
Help? When did you first go to a gynecologist?

I used to work for a gyn.  We always recommended yearly check ups once you start being sexually active.

When you’re start being sexually active. Most places won’t give you a pap until you’re 21. That still doesn’t mean you shouldn’t go until then. It’s healthy to go every year.

Since you are sexually active, you should go. If you are nervous, just know it’s really not a big deal, it doesn’t hurt or anything and there’s no need to feel awkward or embarrassed because the gynecologists literally do Pap smears and see vaginas all day every day. It’s just good to get into the habit of getting Pap smears yearly because then you’ll establish a medical history of what is normal for you and you’ll know if anything changes. Hope that makes sense! You could always seek out a planned parenthood - that’s where I went for my first few Pap smears and to get birth control pills. Or you could search around online for local gynecologists and check out reviews of them so you feel comfortable. I hope this helped!
