Is it possible for a lactose intolerance to come and go?

my 7 month old developed a lactose intolerance from having a stomach bug. Doctor said it was temporary so we put him on lactose free formula for a week or 2 and his diareaha went away so put him back on his normal formula. A week later and his diareaha is back. could his lactose intolerance be back or could there be something else? He has no other symptoms except maybe teething a little. Thanks in advance

I believe legitimate lactose intolerance is permanent, but lots of little tummies don’t process milk well (either milk based formulas or nursing after mom drinks milk herself) and most babies grow out of this. I would imagine this milk sensitivity could come and go as your baby’s stomach/gut matures.

No. If you're actually lactose intolerant, it does not come and go. It's possible to a sensitivity to dairy, though. That can come and go and vary depending on what you're consuming.

You can have a temporary issue with your stomach lining after an illness where you just don’t tolerate things well, so there’s that.
But ALSO, if you are very allergic and get very sick or have a severe allergic reaction like a milk protein allergy, you can have kind of like “aftershock” allergies for weeks after. I am allergic to tree nuts and not allergic to many other foods, if I ingest tree nuts in a pesto sauce by accident and have a severe reaction... a week later I may have an allergy to strawberries and get a rash because I’m just REALLY sensitive. A month later I’m fine and back to eating them. 
My son is the same way, unfortunately for him. He has had reactions to soy, chocolate, mango, all kinds of things in the wake of a “big” allergic reaction (he has a severe egg allergy), but been fine a month later and tested negative in blood tests for those allergens.
