Joint accounts while in a relationship? Not married? What are your thoughts

Question

Been togeather 5 years broke up twice and have one child. What are your thoughts? Money has always been an issue and I know it’s the root to all evil so I don’t want it to take over the relationship over whose paying what.. thoughts on it please

I used to live with a bank manager. Even he wouldn’t have a joint account with his wife... 
you’ve broke up twice, that isn’t stable all it takes is for another breakup and he could wipe the the account and leave you with nothing

You've broken up twice, definitely not. My husband and I got our first joint account after we were married. We've never had "seperate" money though. It may have been in separate accounts but it was never any different.

When we moved in together we got a joint checking account that we both deposited even money in and only used for bills and joint things like trips and date nights. We both still had our own separate main accounts without access from the other. It worked well for us, but we had never gone through a breakup and it was one step closer to marriage for us. To each their own.

I'll never do joint accounts again. My ex husband cleaned me out before I could open my own account when I left him. Having separate accounts really isn't that difficult now that transferring money between accounts is as simple as sending an email.

It depends on what the purpose is? I don’t see anything wrong with a joint checking and savings, for joint bills and to build a savings together, but I would still keep separate checking and savings accounts as well.
For my husband and I, we got our joint acct together when we bought our house (prior to getting married), and got a joint savings account as well to save for emergency fund. But even now, we still have our own accounts and a portion of our pay goes into the joint and a portion to our separate, to spend however you want.

BF and I have been together for about a year and a half and have been living with each other for about a year of that, we are setting up a joint account for all joint expenses (rent, utilities, etc) but still have our own accounts that are our “main accounts”... the joint account just makes life and paying bills less of a hassle

My husband and i got a joint one when we were engaged and had moved from NJ to Oregon bc it was easier but given that you guys have broken up I'd be really careful. If both names are on it and you break up he can take all the money in there and you can't do anything about it.

My husband and I waited a year or so into our marriage to have a joint account. It is our main account but he has his own and I have my own. We also have a credit card seperatelt and one together. We pay all the bills from the main account. He occasionally sends me money if I buy him something or charge sometbing on my credit card for him (mine has a higher limit).. its a running joke we have. I would wait until your relationship is stable. Money problems can be hell so you have to be completely open and transparent..otherwise it will get messy. I am really good with finances and have explained to him and shown him how and what we need to do.

We’re common law. We have a joint account because when we met I agreed to cut my hours to raise his son. I needed to be able to go to the grocery store and pay bills. We had a short break several years back, but we’ve been very stable. It works for us but I can it not working for everyone. With you guys being broken up twice, I’d wait. Maybe you each cash out part of your check for groceries and stuff, but I’d split bills and rent evenly or by percentage of what you make (so if he makes more, he pays more, like 20% of each of your checks)

My husband and I have access to each other’s but we don’t share... he pays most of the bills, I buy most of the groceries and clothing for kids... however, we also own multiple businesses and do really well. So it really isn’t an issue as we both have access to money.
