what do you game on?

so my boyfriends birthday is coming up QUICK, and i was clueless what to get him, he told me nothing. i asked around in the family, got some answers. he plays games on his desktop a lot, like a lot. he has a HP pavilion p665y 2009. he told his family he needs a new graphics card and cpu . what are they? i’m so confused what i’m looking for..

Graphics cards are very expensive because of ram prices at the moment depending on what he’s wanting to upgrade to. 1070/1070ti is running around $400 on average. A 1050 might be a good one or a 1060 if you’re willing to pay a bit more. A 1080 will run you around $500+ and with the 11 series coming out soon, it might be best to wait since prices *might* drop. 
Cpu is a possibility but depending on the mobo in the pc you’re limited. 8th gen Intel cpus require a whole new mobo. The i5 7th gen cpus are great for gaming (great overclocking compared to the 7th gen i7s. 
Honestly, a steam gift card would probably be easier or just give him some money so he can get the parts himself. 
I’m not super familiar with amd and ryzen so I can’t comfortably speak on those BUT most HP’s out of the box use intel.

An ssd as a boot drive might be a nice upgrade for him. 
Samsung’s are great next to sandisks. 128GB is more than enough for a boot drive or you could go up to 500GB or even 1TB.
