The biggest challenge I find in being a mother is finding balance. I want my son to be brave but I need him to be cautious. I want him to run with his arms out wide and his eyes closed pretending he’s flying but I need him to know he could fall. I want him to speak up for himself but I need him to also know when it’s time to be quiet. I want him to want to jump off the high dive, but I want him to do the short dive first.

The hardest part for me will be watching him fall. But once he does, he’ll learn. He’ll learn his boundaries. But I promise you that when he’s climbing the steps of the high dive with a huge smile on his face this momma will be shaking inside, because the hardest part of being a mom is wanting to protect him forever but knowing he will be a better man if I let him fall every now and then...
