Would you abort? (Read description)

Question

You’ve just being told at your 20 week scan your baby only has half a heart and will only be able to survive for the first week or two with some medicine but then will stop working and he will die the doctor highly suggests you abort the pregnancy as it’s risky for you to stay pregnant and the baby won’t survive ... you have 2 other children what do you do?

I would make absolute certain this is the case and get a second or even third opinion before making a decision. But at 20 weeks that’s a hard decision.

I’d honestly take my chances. I’m not against abortion but I wouldn’t do it in this case. I’ve read stories where parents were told their kids have life threatening illnesses or birth defects, but the baby comes out just fine. Worst case scenario I’d lose my baby either way so I may as well take a chance and hope for rhe best

It would completely depend on the risk to mom in that situation. If it is dangerous for mom then it is a necessary decision to end it. Mom shouldn't risk her life when she has other small children who need her. Of course I would get at least 3 different opinions first to make sure that the doctor is giving you correct information. Doctors aren't always right. They are human and make mistakes. But that's not a decision to take lightly.

firstly I'm so sorry your in this situation, I know how heart wrenching it is! back in 2015 I was 16 weeks & it was discovered that I had no amniotic fluid. I was referred to fetal medicine for more scans & tests. it turned out that our diagnosis was bleak! our baby had no kidneys which was why there was no amniotic fluid (potters syndrome) I was 20 weeks when this was confirmed. we were told I could carry the baby as far as nature would let me but the outcome was the baby would die indefinitely as the lungs wouldn't develop due to no amniotic fluid also. so they put it to in a way as nicely as possible that if I ended the pregnacy the baby was so small it would die during labour but if I continued when it was born it would struggle for minutes or hours due to no lung development. we decided to end the pregnacy at 21 weeks & 1 day! this was not murder! it was what was best for our baby! our son Jorge Nicholas was born 5.11.15 weighing 15oz we got to stay with him over  night, dress him, take photos & love him! it was the worst & most beautiful time all rolled into one. so my advice to you would be make sure of the diagnosis get a 5th opinion of needs before you make this decision. & for the small minded people who say it's murder I hope & prey they are never faced with this decision! it's a choice no mother should ever be faced with to terminate a pregnancy or go to term &  watch her tiny baby slowly die! it's horrendous to go through either way. sending you all my love at this tough time but take comfort in only very special, strong women are given the blessing of being a mummy to an angel.

I’d need to get another doctors opinion, I’d need to discuss it with my husband, I’d need to learn everything and anything about the condition and how accurate it can be detected, and my chances of survival.

Absolutely. I’m not going to carry to term just to have more heartbreak. I don’t want that kind of pain. I’d rather have it over and done with.

At my 20 week US we found a lot of complications and we were given the option. We are now 26 weeks. I am so in love with our little boy that I just couldn’t think of it. I have 3 other boys at home and he is no different than them, I’d fight for them too. Do your research, could he get a heart transplant? Talk to as many DR or professionals as you can.

I would continue the pregnancy so I could give my baby the goodbye it deserves and get to hold them, that is also assuming the risk to myself is low enough that I’m not going to leave my living children with no mother
