what's the point of middle names?

i hope this doesnt offend anyone but in my opinion some people are going overboard with the names especially if it's a strong first name or last name.. neither my husband nor I have a middle name. Should I think of a middle name for the baby? we dont know the gender yet but if it's a girl her name is Isla and if it's a boy his name is Niklaus. last name is Munoz! give us your input?

Some have middle names in honor of family tradition, some want to honor a family member or a friend, some names just sound good with others and some people like me grew up hating the fact that they didn’t have a middle name. I was one of 14 Julias in school - I always thought that with a middle name I could have just used that that instead of Julia :) so obviously in light of my experience our daughter will have a middle name. 
But it’s perfectly fine to not have one. It’s a personal preference.

My mom doesn’t have a middle name but she also has a non-common first and last name.
I like middle names because it makes it easier to differentiate people for professional reasons. For example: I worked for a bank and if I was looking for John Smith’s account among 100 records of different John Smiths, it’s much easier to narrow down with a middle name and help ensure accuracy.

Both of mine have middle names to honor family members who were the most influential in our lives. For example my son’s middle name is my husband’s dad’s name who died when my husband was 13 and my daughter’s middle name is going to be my great grandmother’s name because she was the bravest and most badass woman I have ever met.

I like middle names...but don't understand the trend of 2, 3, 4 or more middle names...on top of a first and last name? Too much! But skip it if you prefer no middle...up to you.

I've wondered the same thing. Maybe it's to better differentiate people that may come along paths with another person with the same name? Otherwise I have no clue!
