Birth control

I take my birth control at night. I’m not very educated on how it works, of course I know it balances hormones and protects against pregnancy, I just have a few questions. If I take it in the morning for instance, it works throughout the day? If I take it at night it works throughout the next day OR does it work for the day of? OR does it just constantly work no matter what time of the day you take it? I know it’s a hormone thing but I had unprotected sex a few times and didn’t go to sleep until 5am or so and I always take it right before bed. I started taking birth control at age 12 when I was diagnosed with PCOS, so I never really thought to ask. I’m 18 now and I just started having sex about a year ago so I am just curious!
