Breastmilk smells like soap

Lisa • Mom of 4 boys and one baby girl. Mom of a high-school graduate, preschooler in heaven, 3 year old twins and a 1 year old princess.

I mixed some older milk with some coconut oil today for bath bars and noticed my milk smelled like soap. I know it could either be from my pump pieces not being rinsed off well or high lipase in my milk. If it is my milk, does anyone know if I can lower my lipase or something to keep my milk from smelling like soap? And will this affect my baby? She nurses all the time but only takes 3 bottles at daycare (she’s 9 weeks).

Update: I hand expressed this morning into a sterile bottle from the hospital and my milk had a very slight soapy smell. So I think I may just have an excess of lipase. My baby never refuses the breast or the bottle so I don’t need to scald my milk, just wondering if there’s something I can do to lower my lipase and will this affect me or her in the future?
