How did you get your child to stop using a pacifier ?

My son is going to be 2 in less than a month, he hasn't said his first word yet so he doesn't talk just babbles like a baby. He understands some things like "go get your shoes" "where's your milk?" He waves hi and bye but does not talk. Since he doesn't really communicate or understand idk how to tell him he has to give up his binky. I'd like to get rid of by his birthday (September 18)
