Formaldehyde?
Hey ladies, recently, I was in my anatomy class and my professor took my class in a small room to look at a cadaver (dead body). I asked him if it was okay for me to go in because I am pregnant, and I was unsure if being in a room with a large amount of formaldehyde would cause harm to my baby. He told me I would be just fine. I trusted his word, I didn’t know much about it at that point but I figured it’s a chemical so it can’t be safe. Yet I trusted him. I had an uneasy feeling as the sign on the door literally said “authorized personnel only, formaldehyde present. May be cancer causing” so I asked him again. “You’re POSITIVE it’s okay for me to go in this room?” He assured me there have been pregnant students in there before and it was fine.
We were in the room for only 20-30 minutes, but I noticed I was getting a headache from the fumes. When I got out of class I looked up the effects of formaldehyde exposure during pregnancy and it’s easy to say I am absolutely terrified for my baby, and pissed off that my professor told me I would be fine.
My question is, do you think the 20-30 minutes I was exposed to formaldehyde was enough to cause harm to my baby? And is there anything I can do now? I am only 5 weeks along, by the way.
